The Forge of Vulcan
Velázquez Diego 1630
(140 Kb); Oil on canvas, 223 x 290 cm (87 3/4 x 114 1/8 in); Museo del Prado, Madrid; No. 1171
Look at how he stands lame on one side.
Vulcan was crippled when his father Zeus (Jupiter) threw him from Mt. Olympus on to the volcanic island of Lemnos
Another story has Vulcan son of Jupiter and Juno being born lame and his mother was so displeased at the sight of him that she threw him out of heaven. He fell for a whole day until he lands on Lemnos.
( Is that the origins of our words Volcano or Volcanic and Lame? )
Milton tells about this in Paradise Lost Book I

And LOOK at the Glare in his eyes!
In this painting above Apollo is telling him his Aphrodite (Venus)
is being unfaith full to him and is with her lover Ares (Mars)!

Here you get an idea of the size of the painting.
